BOSTON -- Residents of Plum Island will find out Friday if a plan to restore about 2,500 feet of eroding beach to save dozens of homes can move forward.
Dredging Channel May Save Island Homes | Images: House Hangs On Ocean's Edge Of the 26 homes that will be affected by the plan, all but two property owners have agreed to give a federal government an easement that would allow for the replenishment of 2,500 feet of eroded beach, the Daily News reported.On Friday, Newbury selectman voted to begin eminent domain proceedings against the owner of the two properties who refuse to sign off on the plan.The plan includes dredging about 120,000 cubic yards of sand from the Merrimack River channel and putting it along the beach from Plum Island Center northward to about 80 or 82 Northern Blvd.Parties have been meeting for a year to try to replenish the beach, which has been eroding at an accelerated rate in recent years. In January, an Army Corps of Engineers study said if no action were taken, as many as 26 buildings could be lost in the next 10 years. One house was washed into the water in November 2008.Plum Island Foundation was still in talks with the attorney for the two property hold-outs on Friday.
