A Spencer man is charged with stealing gold coins and jewelry, then pawning them in order to buy heroin and luxury hotel rooms, police said.

The alleged robberies took place over six months, said police. David T. Bulak, 28, of Spencer, ended up collecting $90,000 from the pawned valuables, said police.

The Worcester Telegram and Gazette reported that Bulak was recently detained by Worcester police at a city pawn shop. Spencer police arrived to the scene to question him in connection with recent burglaries, police said. Bulak was taken into custody by Spencer police and charged with the break-ins, said police.

Bulak admitted to breaking into three homes, including a robbery in March where he stole gold and palladium that he later pawned for $10,000 at a time, according to court documents.

Ten-thousand dollars is the limit pawn shops are allowed to pay out at one time by state law.

Police said the money was used to feed Bulak's heroin habit, and that he also paid for several high-end hotel rooms.

Once the money from the March robbery was gone, Bulak and another man began broke into other homes, police allege.

Police said they expect to charge the other man in connection to the robberies soon.

Spencer police worked with Charlton police and the New England State Police Information Network to gather information that led them to Bulak, police said.

Bulak is facing 14 charges stemming from the three robberies, and was held on $5,000 bail at his arraignment in Western Worcester District Court in East Brookfield on Monday.

He is due back in court for a pretrial hearing on Oct. 13.
