Crews restored subway service late Wednesday evening after a small electrical fire at South Station. Two stops were closed for as many as three hours.

The incident prompted the closure of South Station and the Chinatown stop on the Orange Line. The closures affected service on the Orange, Blue, Red and Silver lines. By 10:15 p.m., officials said crews were able to restore full service to the Red Line.

A large amount of smoke at South Station was reported and trains were evacuated. Several trains elsewhere were stalled on tracks after power was cut so crews could attend to the fire in the station.

People sought alternatives to get home, which became difficult as traffic was heavy and jammed in some areas.

The restoration late Wednesday is anticipated to avoid service disruptions to Thursday morning's commute.

The incidents Wednesday marked the second day in a row there has been a major problem for the T. On Tuesday, 18 people were hurt when a commuter train hit an emergency bumper pulling into South Station. None of the injuries were life-threatening, and the accident was being blamed on operator error. The driver told investigators he misjudged the distance needed to stop the train.
