QUINCY, Mass. -- Quincy is reviewing its emergency response system after the fire department missed a 911 call about a woman in labor.NewsCenter 5's Kelley Tuthill reported that the two dispatchers on duty said they didn't hear the call clearly."What's the problem?" the dispatcher said."My wife is having a baby," Hector Gonzalez said.Hector Gonzalez called 911 at 4:04 a.m. Thursday. His wife, Katie, was in labor."At 3 a.m., she was having contractions and I started getting everything ready and at 3:15 a.m., 3:20 a.m., she was saying, 'I'm not going to make it,'" he said."I was petrified. I was scared," Katie Gonzalez said.Dispatchers at the police station radioed that an ambulance and fire truck were on the way. But the fire department never made it to Buckley Street."The fire department should have been dispatched. The fire alarm operator indicated he was unable to clearly hear the caller," Acting Fire Chief Joseph Barron said. That operator, a 30-year veteran, will receive a written reprimand. Another firefighter will be retrained while the department reviews the quality of its equipment."We're going to take steps to make sure this doesn't happen again," Barron said. But Katie Gonzalez said within minutes she had all the help she needed to deliver 7-pound Soledad on the bathroom floor."If they did show up, it would have been overkill," Hector Gonzalez said. "We had actually had six EMTs in our house with myself and the police officers. There were actually eight of us trying to help out my wife."Parents and baby are all doing fine. NewsCenter 5 was unable to reach the president of the firefighters union for comment. He told the Patriot Ledger it was an unfortunate situation.
