Winchester police believe they found the person responsible for a rash of robberies in the area.

Police said Jesse Chaison, 22, of Somerville, is responsible for dozens of breaks into cars in Winchester, Stoneham, Medford and possibly other towns.

"In recent months, it's been horrendous. We were getting three or four a week," said Winchester police Lt. Jim Pierce.

Police said the break in the case came from an alert resident who heard someone in her car and called police.

"I couldn't sleep. It was about 1:30 in the morning, and I came outside to enjoy the summer night because there was a little bit of lightning. Suddenly I heard my car door slam," said Helen Martinelli.

On Tuesday, police displayed thousands of dollars worth of items believed stolen during at least nine robberies, including GPS units, cameras, watches and golf clubs.

Police said they will not release a picture of Chaison until other potential victims have tried to pick him out of a lineup.

"I'm just happy to get the guy off the street. I feel bad for him. I'm sure there is something wrong with him. Everyone is safe. He dint get into my house. They caught him three houses down, so it's a good thing," Martinelli said.

Chaison will be arraigned in Woburn District Court in connection with at least nine breaks, police said.
