A 10-year-old Worcester boy died when he was struck and killed by a pickup truck after riding his bicycle into the road, according to the Worcester Telegram and Gazette.

Police said the driver of the pickup truck swerved to try to avoid the boy as he rode his bicycle off of a driveway at Mulcahy Field onto Acton Street at about 6:45 p.m., but he was unable.

Police identified the boy as Jovanni Melendez, according to the Telegram and Gazette.

Bystanders and emergency responders performed CPR on Melendez, who was bleeding heavily at the crash scene.

The 2005 Ford Ranger pickup truck struck a parked car and a parking sign before coming to rest on the sidewalk at 17 Acton St. The driver was transported to the hospital as a precaution.

Jennifer Pare, a resident who witnessed the accident, told the Telegram and Gazette that the pickup truck did not appear to be speeding before the crash.

Michael K. Robinson, who lives at 17 Acton St., came out of his house after hearing the crash and witnessed the efforts to save Melendez.

“I knew right away something was wrong,” he told the paper. “That boy was in rough shape. It would be a miracle if he made it. I tried to take his pulse, but it was weak.

“The driver was out of the truck and screaming for help. He was really shaken up.”

Police said Melendez lives on a street nearby the crash scene.
