WORCESTER, Mass. -- The baby who had been cut from the womb of a slain Worcester woman was found alive in New Hampshire Wednesday night, police said.Julie Corey, 35, of Worcester, was taken into custody in Plymouth, N.H., and charged with kidnapping. Police said the baby, a girl, was found at a New Hampshire hospital and is being evaluated.Darlene Haynes, 23, was found stuffed in the closet of her Worcester apartment Monday. She had been eight months pregnant at the time of her death, medical authorities said, and her unborn baby was missing.Police said they were led to Corey because she told friends she had just had a baby."Friends became concerned about how she got home so early after giving birth," said Worcester police Sergeant Kerry Hazelhurst.Officers said a landlord discovered the body of Haynes after residents complained of a strong smell coming from her Southgate Street apartment. Haynes, a mother of three children, had not been seen for several days and her dog had been barking for days."It was just a horrifying smell and just led me to the bedroom. And that's where I located ... the body was in the closet," landlord William Thompson said.Haynes' skull was cracked and her womb cut open, the fetus removed.Haynes' uncle, Karl Whitney, said that the family is still in shock."How you go forward with this? I have no idea. I, having two grandchildren of my own, could not imagine this every happening to one of my kids," Whitney said. "Her other two daughters are aware of what happened to Mom, but, you know, it's difficult to know at a young age.""Darlene had I guess chosen a name for the baby but wouldn't tell anybody because she wanted to surprise everybody," Whitney said.Corey was being held in New Hampshire on fugitive from justice charges. Police said she may face murder charges when she is returned to Massachusetts.
