BOSTON -- An Attleboro mall has offered to give the Registry of Motor Vehicles a rent-free space to open up a new RMV branch following the closure of a nearby office that served thousands of residents. The owners of the Emerald Square mall plan to host Registrar Rachel Kaprielian for a tour of the space on Tuesday morning, State Rep. Betty Poirier told The Sun Chronicle of Attleboro. An RMV office in North Attleboro that previously serviced residents near the mall was closed down Friday as part of an overhaul plan to consolidate operations at the RMV. Offices in 11 communities will close down as part of the plan, and the remaining RMV branches will get technological upgrades to increase efficiency and cut costs.Click here for a state map with RMV office changes."It's a very generous offer by the mall," Poirier told the Sun Chronicle. Poirier said the space is large enough to service residents from both Attleboro and Taunton, where another RMV office narrowly avoided being shut down.Kaprielian and local officials also toured a post office building in downtown Attleboro and a highway rest stop in Mansfield as alternatives for an express registry branch, the Sun Chronicle reported. Kaprielian has not indicated when officials will make a decision about opening a new office."We now have three free spaces," Poirier said. "If she can't pick from those, I don't know what else we can do."
