A man was struck and killed by a Wal-Mart truck on Friday after he got out of his car on Interstate 495 south in Westford.

The crash happened just before 9 a.m. near the Boston Road exit on I-495 south in Westford.

State police said a man got out of his 2009 Chevrolet Impala in the breakdown lane of I-495 and was struck by a 2009 Freightliner tractor-trailer truck being driven by George Orchard, 45, of Chichester, N.H.

The victim, whose name has not been released, was taken to Lowell General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The crash happened about a mile south of the Chelmsford rest stop.

The break down lane and the right travel lane were closed for about 30 minutes after the crash.
