Kazakhstan Nationals Charged With Printing Fake Money

Two men from Kazakhstan were arrested this week and charged with producing hundreds of dollars worth of counterfeit bills in their Chatham apartment.

Alexandr Kustovskiy, 21, and Alibek Tailakov, 19, both of 1297 Main Street, Apt. A, will be arraigned Monday on charges of possession of counterfeit currency and manufacturing counterfeit currency.

Police said they found more than $700 worth of counterfeit $20 bills and a counterfeit $100 bill inside Kustovskiy and Tailakov’s apartment after executing a search warrant this week. The pair also had two computers, a printer, several portable data storage devices, several cell phones, several iPods and printing equipment, police said.

Secret service investigators are working with Chatham police to determine if any of the counterfeit money is circulating in the area.

Police said the two men had visas allowing them to stay in the United States.

Kustovskiy and Tailakov are each being held on $5,000 cash bail. They are scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Orleans District Court.
