State police said one man was killed and six other people were seriously injured when a Jeep allegedly clipped a taxi cab in Springfield and a chase and crash ensued.

Troopers said David Ray, 23, of Enfield, Conn., was killed when the Jeep veered out of control on Interstate 91 and he was ejected from the vehicle.

The Jeep Wrangler, driven by Nathaniel Chisnall, 20, also of Enfield, was attempting to pass the taxi at the intersections of Union and Main streets when the driver’s side of the Jeep struck the front passenger side of the taxi.

Officers said the Jeep then fled the scene, entering onto Route 91 South, with the Ford following closely behind.

The Jeep veered out of control, crossed all lanes and struck the center median guardrail, police said.

All of Chisnall's passengers were from Enfield. They were identified as Laszlo Lindinger, 20, Steven Samson, 20, Tyler Garrity, 21, Katherine Carrigheria, 21 and Jerry Lacasse, 23, all of whom suffered serious injuries and were taken to Baystate Medical Center.

The taxi driver identified as David Main, 51, of Chicopee, was uninjured in the crash, police said.

The crash remains under investigation but police said it appeared alcohol may have been a factor.
