SOUTHBOROUGH, Mass. -- A day after a powerful band of thunderstorms and torrential downpours tore through the region, MetroWest towns are cleaning up and drying out.At the Southborough Library, there are many signs of the power and damage of Tuesday's storm. There is yellow caution tape sealing off the entrance to the lower level, a sign that reads "Closed for Flooding" and fans have been set up to help dry the area.Librarian Jane Cain said the rain came down hard and fast and flooded the children's room."We came into the children's room and had never seen water on the carpet everywhere and that's what was happening," she said.Cain and her staff scrambled to move books from the lower shelves to the top and move the furniture out of the reach of water."It quickly went from a trickle of water into the children's room to 3 inches of water. I'd say within a half an hour," she said. The children's room is closed until the damage can be assessed and repaired. In the rest of the town, people are cleaning up and swapping storm stories.Southborough Fire Chief John Mauro said the public safety complex was hit by lightning, which temporarily knocked out the 911 system."We received several calls for flooded basements that we had to pump. And we also had calls during the emergency calls. Actually, a car floated down a driveway," he said.Sharp Field on Parkerville Road was one of the hardest hit areas in town. On Wednesday, the field was still under water.
