Salem's tall ship Friendship will miss Sail Boston 2009 because of rot in the bow of the ship, the Salem Evening News reported Tuesday.

The ship that was launched in 1998 will be sitting at a dock in a Maine harbor as dozens of other tall ships head to Boston for the event. Inspectors are trying to determine the extent of damage to the ship.

The 104-foot Friendship was scheduled to be open for public tours during the weekend.

The rot was discovered about two weeks ago during an inspection.

Officials said that the wood that the ship's figurehead is sitting on has been compromised.
