PEABODY, Mass. -- Route 128 in Peabody was closed in both directions Monday afternoon after wires came down across all lanes of the highway. The wires from a transformer came down on the highway near Route 1 just before 5 p.m. The road was closed between Routes 1 and 95.Traffic was detoured off the highway both north and south of the accident for about an hour after the crash. The transformer caught fire and the high tension wires came down after a truck hit sagging wires, according to Massachusetts State Police."A 2009 Freightliner truck operated by Francis Tumwesigye, 36, of Chelsea, caught the sagging wires causing a second pole to snap and brought the wires down," police said.Aerial photos showed the transformer still smoking more than 30 minutes after the crash. Debris from the truck littered the highway. There were no reports of injuries. Power company crews shut down the power to the lines and removed the wires from the highway just before 6 p.m.The problems on Route 128 followed a tanker rollover on Route 95 in Newburyport earlier Monday. That crash closed the Northbound side of the highway for most of the day."It is the worst day I can ever remember," said Sgt. Michael Popovics.Route 128 was reopened to traffic after an hour.
