An unidentified woman was hit and killed by a Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority commuter train in Needham Monday afternoon, MBTA officials said.

The woman was struck a quarter mile from Hersey Station at the Greendale Avenue Bridge in Needham by the 12 p.m. outbound train from South Station, according to Lydia Rivera of the MBTA.

She was confirmed dead at the scene. Her identity was not immediately released.

A bus was sent to Hersey station to transport about 35 customers who were on the train to Needham Heights. Four buses were sent to operate between Forest Hills station and Needham Heights while the accident scene was cleared.
