Traffic Backed Up For Miles Near Crash Site
BOURNE, Mass. -- Holiday traffic was snarled for miles on Friday afternoon after a multi-car crash closed the Sagamore bridge. At least four cars were damaged in the crash, which occurred at about 2:30 p.m. Witnesses told NewsCenter 5’s Jack Harper that a vehicle traveling near the Cape Cod end of the bridge somehow flipped into the air and landed in the path of oncoming traffic.A woman who was driving the opposite direction told NewsCenter 5 that a Jeep SUV landed on the hood of her car.“Out of my peripheral vision, I just saw the two smaller white cars coming into me and I saw the black SUV flying in the air onto my hood and I just braked,” said the woman. At least one person was injured in the crash. The condition of the victim is unknown.Fire and emergency responders used a patchwork of bricks and other materials to prop up one of the vehicles as they freed the victim, who was trapped underneath.Traffic was backed up for about 15 miles heading into Cape Cod and about 2 miles in the other direction as crews cleared the wreckage. The bridge was reopened by about 3:30 p.m., but traffic remained frozen several hours later.Police were still investigating the cause of the crash.
