BOSTON -- There's a fight brewing over how to get a Rhode Island gaming facility out of debt.NewsCenter 5's Pam Cross reported that Twin River is $589 million in debt. The owners declared bankruptcy last week.A new plan that was backed by the governor included eliminating greyhound racing and extending the slots to 24 hours a day.Neighbors of the Lincoln, R.I., facility said a town referendum already asked about expanding hours and gaming."The town of Lincoln voted by a 2 to 1 margin no. We do not approve. It was a paper victory," resident Anthony Baglini said. The referendum was nonbinding. This week the legislature, in defiance of the governor, voted to keep racing and expand it, saving 225 jobs.Neighbors worry more about round the clock slots, calling traffic and lights too much."The lights, particularly on the weekends but seven days a week, can literally light up the interior of my home. I could read the newspaper on the inside of my home," said resident Hal Perry.
