Police: 86-Year-Old Driver Hits Pedestrian
Victim Hit By Car In Melrose
MELROSE, Mass. -- An elderly man was seriously injured when he was hit by an 86-year-old driver in Melrose on Sunday, according to police. The victim, who was not identified, was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries after he was hit at 10:27 a.m. His condition is unknown. The driver, Virginia Nelson, of Malden, was interviewed by police after the crash, but no charges have been filed against her. She has not been cited in the incident.Nelson told NewsCenter 5's Jarrod Holbrook that the man appeared "from nowhere" and that he stepped into the street between two parked cars. Nelson and a witness both said that the man was near a crosswalk but not inside of it as he emerged onto the road. The 86-year-old said she has been driving for more than 65 years and that she has never been in an accident. She said she was returning from church with her daughter when the crash occurred. The incident is the latest in a string of automobile crashes involving elderly drivers that has sparked calls for mandatory driving tests for older motorists. A bill sponsored by state Sen. Brian Joyce would require drivers 85 and older to pass a skills test when they renew their licenses.Joyce resurrected the legislation this month after three other crashes involving elderly drivers sparked public outcry. In the most recent incident, a 4-year-old Stoughton girl was killed when she was struck by an 88-year-old driver while crossing the street. The woman who struck the girl is contesting a motor vehicle homicide citation. At least eight people were also injured earlier in the month when a 73-year-old woman plowed into a crowd gathered at a Vietnam War memorial in Plymouth. One day before that, a 93-year-old drove through the front entrance of a Danvers Wal-Mart. A mother and her 1-year-old baby were hurt.
