Closing Called Off At Last Minute

Margaret Carr thought she had the latest transition in her life perfectly planned.

Thursday she closed on the sale of the house she and her young son lived in in Westwood. She said the closing on the new home she and her new husband bought was scheduled for 9 a.m. Friday.

"Not until last night did we find out that we were not closing on this home. We were assured that it was going to happen today at 9 a.m.," said Carr.

Newscenter 5's Amalia Barreda reported the mortgage was applied for and approved through the Citizens Bank branch on Centre Street in Jamaica Plain. But Thursday night the bank claimed not to have all the necessary paperwork.

"We have provided paperwork to them not once, not twice, but in some cases three times, the same paperwork because they have lost it," said Carr.

She said the bank has claimed not to have a mortgage commitment letter it sent to the couple dated April 3rd. Now the couple's cars reflect a vagabond kind of existence. This after Carr organized everything to make sure it would be a problem free move.

"We were having the carpet installers come at 10:30, we were having the movers come at 11. What is most infuriating to us is no one seems to be taking ownership of the problem at Citizens. We just got married last Friday and thanks to Citizens Bank we're spending our honeymoon being homeless," said Carr.

Late Friday afternoon the bank released a statement saying it does not comment on individual customer matters.

The couple not only expects Citizens to quickly correct the problem. They also want to be reimbursed for a lot of extra expenses, like hotel rooms, furniture storage, clothing, and even medication to treat her diabetes.
