BOSTON -- A 4-year-old Stoughton girl died overnight after she was struck by a car while riding a scooter on a family walk Saturday, according to the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office.

The girl was identified by family members as Diya Patel. Police said Diya was crossing the street in a crosswalk on her scooter when a Toyota Camry slammed into her, throwing her across the street.

The 88-year-old woman who hit Diya has not been charged in the crash. She was treated for shortness of breath Saturday. NewsCenter 5 has learned that the car is registered to Ilse Horn, of Canton.

A nurse and an off-duty firefighter who heard the accident rushed to help Diya and administered CPR before she was airlifted to a Boston hospital for treatment. She then died during the night.

"I heard something hit," said the nurse, Jennifer Cundall. "I assumed it was a car hitting a curb and then I saw a little body going across the street."

Investigators said that speed is not a factor in the crash. They estimate that the driver was traveling at about 30 mph in a 35 mph traffic zone when the crash occurred.
