Man Suffers Injury Aboard 40-Foot Vessel Near Granite Point

BOSTON, Mass. -- A fisherman died on Thursday after suffering a head injury aboard a 40-foot fishing vessel operating approximately 10 miles northeast of Granite Point.The fisherman's name and the name of the vessel are being withheld pending notification of next of kin."Our thoughts go out to the man's family and friends," said Chief Petty Officer Gerald Welton, the operations unit controller at the First Coast Guard District Command Center in Boston. "As lifesavers, the loss of a life is always a hard thing to accept."The Coast Guard was notified of the situation by a second fisherman aboard the vessel, and Sector Boston diverted two Jayhawk rescue helicopter crews, which were conducting training north of Plymouth, to the scene.The victim was hoisted aboard a Jayhawk at 3:48 p.m. He was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he later died.Additionally, a Coast Guard Station from Scituate, Mass., 25-foot response boat crew was launched, and crewmembers provided initial first aid and assisted the rescue swimmers with hoisting the patient.
