Two Massachusetts teens were killed and a third seriously injured early Wednesday in a crash on Interstate 295 in Rhode Island. Police said the teens may have been drinking at a Providence bar before the crash.

Rhode Island State Police said four people were riding in the 2000 Dodge Stratus on I-295 north about a mile south of Exit 8 in Smithfield, R.I., when the car veered out of the high-speed lane and into the median, where it struck a rock ledge and trees at 12:38 a.m.

The two teens who were in the back seat were pronounced dead at the scene, the Providence Journal reported. Marcello Ventrella, of Bellingham, was thrown from the vehicle, and Aram J. Pothier, of Blackstone, was pinned in the vehicle, police said.

The driver of the car, Robert Baez, of Bellingham, was seriously injured. The fourth teen in the car, Christopher J. Cuomo, of Bellingham, was not seriously injured.

Cuomo called his mother from his cell phone after the crash and she called 911, the paper reported.

Rhode Island investigators are trying to determine how the 19-year-olds were served alcohol at Providence bar before the fatal crash.

"They originally started off in Massachusetts and they did end up in an establishment in Providence. At this time, it is preliminary and we are still looking onto the details of where they were coming from," Rhode Island State Police Lt. Joe DelPrete said.

Three of the teens had graduated from Bellingham High School.

"These young men were good-hearted people. They were fun-loving kind of guys. I knew them as assistant principal and as principal. Not malicious. Good people," Bellingham High School Principal Edward Fleury said.

Police said it did not appear any of the teens were wearing seat belts, and they believe all four had been drinking.

"We have had many programs trying to get these messages across. We will continue to do so. Hopefully, this accident will have an impact on students to make better decisions," Fleury said.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash. No charges have been filed.
