A Good Samaritan stopped to remove a turtle from Route 9 Saturday evening in Spencer, causing a backup and consequent three-vehicle collision, when a driver did not stop his car in time, according to the Worcester Telegram and Gazette.

The collision resulted in delays and several minor injuries, but the turtle was saved, police said.

More than 10 cars were stopped at around 5 p.m. as someone helped the turtle, but a 67-year-old Shrewsbury man was swerving when he drove his Mustang into a stopped Kia SUV, which in turn collided with a Toyota 4Runner, police said.

A passenger in the Kia and the Toyota driver were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, police said. All of the vehicles' passengers and drivers were wearing their seat belts.

The Spencer Police Department, Spencer Fire Department and Leicester Police Department were at the scene.
