BOSTON -- NewsCenter 5's Amalia Barreda blogs from the courtroom of the Christian Karl Gerhartsreiter's kidnapping case. Gerhartsreiter, 48, who goes by the name Clark Rockefeller, is accused of kidnapping his then-7-year-old daughter Reigh Boss last July, then fleeing with her to Baltimore.3:30 p.m. Testimony has ended for the day. Boss has recounted the whole day of the kidnapping.....the social worker called and was hysterical....she went to the scene and was "freaked, traumatized"a week later was reunited with Reigh....had no idea entire week where they were. was reunited by FBI in Baltimore....gave her a big hug, Reigh was thin had lost weight. The description of the reunion is the only time she smiled....was otherwise measured and very controlled throughout her testimony.3:15 p.m. Consulting legal papers, Sandra Boss testified that Clark Rockefeller essentially gave up custody of Reigh when Boss started pushing for full custody because she was questioning his identity. His offer through his lawyers -- Boss would get full custody of the child and in exchange he wanted $1 million. She countered with $750,000 and they settled on $800,000. Rockefeller also wanted 2 cars, a dress and her engagement ring. They then settled on permitting him to have three supervised visits a year, each lasting three days.3 p.m. Boss just testified Rockefeller was not present at the hospital when she gave birth to Reigh. He showed up 18 hours later, and she also had no input in naming the baby. He decided on Reigh and he had no involvement with the baby for the first 3 months. Then they got a nanny. She said by the summer of 2000, when they had a house in Corning, N.H., she realized she "needed to change her marital status" because "I wasn't happy in the marriage." Clark started to woo her again like before they were married but she proceeded with plans to stay in NY more and he would go there on weekends. Then she discovered she was pregnant and decided to resume the marriage. Boss always refers to him as the defendant or my then husband. Her answers are very measured and calm and her voice does not betray any bitterness or anger.Meanwhile she continued to contribute 100 percent towards the household income. She decided to move back to Boston. Her situation, as she described it, had become intolerable.2:30 p.m. Mason Peltz is an investment portfolio manager who met Rockefeller in December 2007 when he had just lost custody of Reigh. They met at a party and Rockefeller said he had had a child out of wedlock with a British woman, and he had effectively raising the child, Snooks, as a solo parent. Rockefeller's story was that the mother decided she wanted the child back so he lost her. Mason said the defendant indicated he might go to England and take the child back....the way he heard it was "the equivalent of kidnapping."Mason said Rockefeller was "clearly distraught" and "felt unjustly treated by the court"The evening they met at the Belmont home of mutual friends Mason said Rockefeller claimed to be in the investment business as well but could never answer questions to Mason's satisfaction about what he exactly did.2:10 p.m. Sandy Boss's testimony has been suspended to take the testimony of Mason Peltz...it's a surprise to all of us.1:10 p.m. Interestingly, Boss refers to him as "the defendant" when she testifies..... Breaking for lunch now. court will last until 3-3:30 today.1:00 p.m. They married October 14, 1995 at Quaker Meeting House in Nantucket....Rockefeller was a Quaker...there were 8 guests including members of her family....no family for him.He had told her some elaborate lies during their courtship....like his parents died in an auto accident when he was 18 and that his work involved restructuring debt for third world countries. She testified he was "the most intelligent person I'd ever met."Not long after they married she testified Rockefeller started to "show more temper" and was much more directive about her movements...started walking her to work more often. He was also less supportive of her friends and started criticizing them more and told her she shouldn't see them.By late '95, Boss says the relationship got worse..."it became a very stressful relationship."12:30 p.m. Sandra "Sandy" Boss's much anticipated trip to the witness stand has begun. Clark Rockefeller's ex-wife is the prosecution's star witness. Her daughter, Reigh, who lives in London with her mother, is not scheduled to testify. All eyes were on the courtroom door when the prosecution announced that their next witness would be Boss, who is 42. She entered wearing a stylish navy blue suit, was sworn in and took the witness stand.Rockefeller's expression seemed grimmer than before....the corners of his mouth drooped down noticeably. She began with a strong voice as she described a bit of her job and her voice seemed to drop a bit when asked if she knew the man sitting at the defense table and if she was once married to him.She is describing how they met at a party in 1993 and said she liked him and started spending alot of time together. Said he was "attractive, very fit, intelligent, polite and really very charming"12:05 p.m. Timothy Bradl is doing the cross examination and is starting him with questions about Rockefeller's demeanor that go to the defense theory of mental illness, that he suffered from delusions of grandeur. Earlier in direct examination, Hopkins said Rockefeller reminded him of Thurston Howell the Third of Gilligan's Island. On the stand, the driver has taken on that affect of a highly educated, well bred, blueblood who spoke with a slight accent. Hopkins testified Rockefeller was always like that.11:15 a.m. Hopkins has been someone dramatic on the stand. For instance, when he testified about Reigh hitting her head he mimicked a little kid crying and rubbed his head and said...."I really whacked my head, Daddy"He's used inflections in his voice at other times too.....he got sing-songy when he said he pulled over to have a meltdown because it felt like the world was against him.11:07 a.m. After Rockefeller left, Hopkins became aware of an amber alert for Reigh. When he realized it involved Clark Rockefeller he said, "my world collapsed. He kidnapped his daughter and I drove the getaway car."At one point he pulled over "to have a little meltdown.....the world's against me fit."He said he was concerned he had been involved in something criminal. Didn't call police and when a detective called him to ask if he had seen Clark Rockefeller that day he lied and said he hadn't.11:00 a.m. btw, the whole conversation I just wrote about happened during a trip to New York, where Rockefeller supposedly went to a board meeting to cast a vote and then came back to Boston. The driver says that on the way back Rockefeller upped the offer to 2500 to $3,000 .Hopkins described the incident when Rockefeller with "Snooks" on his shoulders and "Harold" the friend were walking down the street. They approach Hopkins' SUV, opened the door, he heard a "whack" and Snooks started to cry, Rockefeller got in closed the door and yelled go, go, go"He said he knew "Harold" was trying to get in the car, Hopkins pulled away to get rid of him, saw him fall, and thought "this guy was as crazy as Clark said he might be."He said he drove to Cambridge street where clark told him to stop...Rockefeller threw an enevelope with $2,000 onto the front seat and took Reigh with him and grabbed a cab. Said he was going to MGH to check out SNooks' head.10:40 a.m. Testimony indicates Rockefeller asked Hopkins for advice about the day he was having his visit with Reigh. He said he was going sailing with Sen. Chaffee's son in Rhode Island, but this "friend" is going to be hanging with him and he didn't want him around. The friend, of course, is the social worker hired to supervise the visit set for Saturday, July 26, 2008. He told the limo driver he was a pain and wanted to get rid of him and would give Hopkins $2,000, "2 grand", if he helped to get rid of him...that is, ditch him.He said the guy was dangerous so Hopkins couldnd't just demand he not come along. Rockefeller said to him "this guy's dangerous, he could hurt me, he could hurt you, he could hurt my daughter."So together they discussed a plan to have Hopkins park somewhere, and Rockefeller comes along with the little girl and the "friend" and he would just jump in the car and leave the friend behind.10:15 a.m. Hopkins doesn't look at all like a cab driver, or a school bus driver and mechanic which is what he is now in Florida. He looks more like an executive. Very crisp appearance in a blue and white stiped shirt with french cuffs, cufflinks and matching paisley tie. He's wearing contemporary glasses and his hair, parted on the left and graying at the temples, is slicked back.10:05 a.m. Limo driver Darrell Hopkins says he first met Rockefeller in the summer of 2007. He saw him in a rainstorm, dressed like he had been sailing, and Hopkins pulled over to see if he needed a ride. Hopkins was a black car driver at the time. He drove Rockefeller to Beacon Hill and Rockefeller contacted him again a couple of times for rides in the following months. He stopped and offered a ride because he thought someone who had been sailing is probably affluent. He drove the daughter as well a couple of times and described them as "happy dad, happy father"Hopkins said he understood that his client was "Clark Rockefeller of THE Rockefeller family" and he used to brag about it.He says Rockefeller reminded him of Thurston Howell the 3rd of Gilligan's Island...wealthly and well educated. He assumed he had a happy family life.9:55 a.m. the 2 jurors who were late apparently abandoned their trip on the green line and walked to court. The trial was delayed 40 minutes. The first witness, limo (or black car driver, as he called it) is on the stand. His name is Darrell Hopkins. He was a one time taxi driver...drove a cab for 22 years before graduating on to black car service. He was driving the black SUV in which Rockefeller made his getaway with Reigh. He was born and raised in Weymouth but now lives in Florida. He's 55 years old.9:35 a.m. They are missing 2 jurors who are apparently late. They have taken a recess.9:17 a.m. Rockefeller is wearing the same navy blue blazer, khaki pants and burgundy stiped tie he's worn every other day. Also, William Boss is from Seattle and flew here to see his daughter testify. The uncle lives in Harwich on the Cape.9:10 a.m. Court is about to start. FYI, the limousine driver is first on the stand and his name is Darrell Hopkins. He's the guy who was driving the black SUV and first took Rockefeller and his daughter away. After that is ex-wife Sandra Boss. Her father, William Boss and an uncle, Sid Bennett, who lives on the Cape are already in the courtroom. The courtroom is about two-thirds full. The spectators are mostly media and courtroom watchers. BTW, lead prosecutor David Deakin is looking very springlike today. He's wearing a light gray suit and a beautiful salmon-pink tie.
