Four people were injured when a sport utility vehicle crashed into a Dunkin Donuts in South Boston on Wednesday.

The incident happened at about 10 a.m. at the store on South Hampton Street.

Tom Joyce, who witnessed the incident, helped pull the driver out of the vehicle after it crashed through the front of the building.

"She had jumped the curb and the safety block and just drove right through," Joyce said. "When I jumped the fence and pulled her out of the car, it was still in drive, and the tires were spinning. She still had her foot on the gas."

Two of the injured were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries, and the other two people were evaluated at the scene. The driver, who was not identified, was not injured.

"It may have been a totally different result if this happened two to three hours sooner," Boston Fire Department District Fire Chief Steven McNeil said.

Officials said the driver may have mistaken the gas pedal for the brake, but the crash remained under investigation.

"I just saw the car come inside," one witness said.

"It was a big boom and then all of a sudden, a crash and then it was over," another witness said.
