A local couple who first met on the MBTA decided to hold their wedding Saturday at the place where they first found love: an inbound train to Boston.

NewsCenter 5’s Jarrod Holbrook reported that Lauren Richey and her husband, Scott Miller, invited friends and family to hop on a commuter rail train to bear witness as they swapped matrimonial vows.

Holding a bouquet of flowers, Richey peered down the tracks of the Framingham/Worcester line before the ceremony, waiting for the train that first brought the couple together a few years ago. Miller, who had already boarded the train, met his fiancée in Ashland, and the couple were wed as the train pulled into the Wellesley Farms station a few stops down the line.

Well-wishers packed into the narrow rows of the train car, kneeling and twisting around to watch the ceremony and snap photographs. A ring-bearer dolled up as a train conductor conveyed the wedding bands down the aisle, and commuters who came to know Richey and Miller served as ushers for the ceremony.

Richey said that she and her husband first became friends while the two were traveling to work on the MBTA. The relationship developed as they talked on the rails each day, until Miller decided to turn up the heat on the romance.

“He brought me flowers on the evening train and asked me out,” laughed Richey. “(I was) thrilled. He was very cute.”

Rev. Judith Downing, who performed the wedding ceremony, said that it was an unorthodox occasion, but one that was fitting for the couple.

“It was a little bumpy, but it went very smoothly,” said Rev. Judith Downing. “It’s very exciting. I’m really thrilled for them because that’s where they met on the train and I think it’s a lovely idea.”
