Saugus Authorities Investigate Fatal Crash
SAUGUS, Mass. -- A Saugus high school student will face homicide and drunken driving charges in the death of a woman who was struck Saturday morning while she was walking her dog. Jonathan Caruso, 18, is accused of striking a mother and daughter with his car after swerving onto a sidewalk near Essex Street and Grove Street at about 7:30 a.m.Carol Marean, 67, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Her daughter, Charlotte Marean, 41, was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital, where she was listed in fair condition.Caruso will be charged with motor vehicle homicide, operating under the influence of alcohol and transporting alcohol illegally.Police said Caruso and two other Saugus High School students attended the school’s promenade on Friday evening and took a boat cruise around Boston Harbor afterwards. Officials said that alcohol was prohibited at both events.“This tragic accident happened after (the prom), so it wasn’t anything that was involved with the schools or any activities that were scheduled,” said Saugus Lt. Mike Annese.A neighbor did not wish to be identified told NewsCenter 5 that she persuaded two people who were in the car to stay at the crash scene following the accident, but a third person fled on foot.“The kids were trying to get out of the car and possibly leave the scene,” the woman said. “They all started walking in different directions, so I advised them that I know what they look like, that they should stay put.”Neighbors and students congregated at the site of the crash throughout the day on Saturday as police investigated the incident. Christina Follis said that she frequently passed by Marean and her daughter while they were out walking in the morning.“They're just really nice neighbors,” said Follis. “To have something like this happen -- it's just really sad."Marean’s dog, Happy, was not injured in the crash, police said.Map: Essex Street and Grove Street, Saugus
