BOSTON -- A local middle school science class is learning how to use chemistry to go green and save money.NewsCenter 5's David Brown reported that seventh-graders at the Northbridge Middle School in Whitinsville are learning how to make homemade cleaning products that cost less than store-bought cleaners.Students learned that by combining baking soda, borax and salt they create a nontoxic, environmentally friendly scrub."They love it. They are just the best. They are so excited about green environmentally, as well as for themselves," science teacher Kathy Rheaume said. The students are excited about the hands-on learning approach to improving their lives and the environment. The green cleaning lesson has even turned into a fundraiser for the school. By selling re-useable microfiber cloth, the school is raising awareness, as well as money. The students are creating their own books of green cleaning recipes."Oftentimes I pull out some of those famous cleaners that are not good for the environment or for the students and start to clean up. When we started this project our goal was to get rid of all of those," Rheaume said."I learned that most cleaners are very toxic nowadays, so in order to keep ourselves and our environment safe, we should use green cleaners," said student Jacob Phillips.
