Toyota Statement On Tundra Trucks

Toyota provided these statements to Team 5 Investigates:

"We at Toyota take great pride in the durability and quality of our products. Toyota recently received a small number of customer concerns related to the rust perforation of frames in 2000 and 2001 Tundra trucks. In keeping with our customer first approach, we are currently investigating each incident and handling them on a case-by-case basis."

When asked whether the rust complaints were evidence of a manufacturing defect, Toyota provided this reponse:

"It is important to understand that "manufacturing defect" is a generic term that globally defines an issue's root cause, whether it is design, assembly, process, or manufacturing. Therefore, we communicate our issues with more specific terminology.

Example: In the case of the Tacoma, also produced in North America, we found perforation corrosion on a small number of frames as a result of inadequate corrosion resistant protection for use in severe cold climate areas with high road salt use. As you know, we have two Customer Support Programs to recover these vehicles and/or inspect and treat or replace the frame and extend the warranty to 15 years with no mileage limitation from the vehicle's in service date, depending on the model year.

Toyota's Customer First approach dictates that using the information obtained from the Tacoma, we pro-actively investigate other vehicles of similar design and production elements. In doing so, our investigations have indicated that there are a small number of complaints for a similar condition on 2000 and 2001 Tundras. We are currently investigating each incident."
