New Hampshire hospital officials said a day-old baby was given to the wrong mother, who then breastfed the baby.

“We had a plan for our baby and now that definitely changed,” said the father of the baby. “The last couple of weeks have not been what we wanted it to be or what we thought it was going to be.”

The family asked to remain anonymous.

Portsmouth Regional Hospital said in a statement that it is conducting an internal investigation and regrets the event.

"We deeply regret that this event occurred. We are continuing to work closely with and support the family involved," the statement said.

The baby's father said the nurse claimed to have misread the last digits on the baby's identification bracelet, which is supposed to match the parents' bracelets.

The father said he spoke to the woman who mistakenly nursed the wrong baby.

"The comment she made that alerted us to the fact that she thought the child wasn't hers -- and she continued breast-feeding and she didn't want to speak up on it -- because she thought, what she said was, 'I don't want to sound crazy,'" the father said.

Since the woman who nursed the baby refused to release her medical records, it will be six months before the baby's family knows if she was exposed to any diseases including HIV or hepatitis.
