BOSTON -- For the first time in two decades, the iconic Fenway Frank hot dog will be made in Massachusetts this season. The Red Sox announced that Kayem Foods Inc., based in Chelsea, will have sole rights to produce the hot dogs, which are a requisite purchase for many Red Sox fans. More than 1 million hot dogs are consumed at the Boston ballpark each year.As part of the agreement, Kayem re-envisioned the hot dog line and will introduce a new version of the frank to baseball fans on Monday for opening day. The slender hot dogs had previously been produced by food maker Sara Lee.“As Kayem celebrates its Centennial anniversary in 2009, we cannot think of a better way to begin our second century than by partnering with baseball’s greatest franchise and its legendary nation of loyal fans,” said vice president of marketing Matt Monkiewicz.Kayem, which was founded in 1909, is the 16th largest hot dog brand in the country and employs about 500 workers.“We cannot imagine a better group of folks to take the helm of Fenway Franks and reinvigorate the brand for us and Red Sox Nation,” said Red Sox Chief Sales and Marketing Officer Sam Kennedy.
