A campus police officer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was arrested Saturday after receiving hundreds of prescription painkillers, according to the Suffolk County district attorney’s office.

Prosecutors said that Joseph D’Amelio, 39, of East Boston, is accused of receiving a package containing 340 OxyContin pills at a parking garage in East Boston. Police said D’Amelio was wearing his uniform and drove an official MIT campus police cruiser to the garage to pick up the shipment.

Anthony Christallo, 39, of Derry, N.H., was also arrested outside of the garage, according to police.

Local FedEx workers became suspicious of the package when it arrived at their facility this week and notified police after discovering the quantity of controlled drugs. Detectives delivered the package to Advanced Automotive on London Street at about 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, where they said D’Amelio retrieved the package.

D’Amelio and Christallo were charged with trafficking more than 100 grams of OxyContin -- an offense that carries a minimum 10-year sentence in a state prison, according to the district attorney's office.

D’Amelio and Christallo will be arraigned Monday in East Boston District Court.
