A man and his border collie were pulled safely from a pond in Woburn Saturday by the quick actions of local firefighters, who dawned rescue suits and plunged into the frigid water.

According to Woburn fire officials, rescuers were called to Horn Pond at about 12:45 p.m. A team of fire and emergency personnel spotted the man about 100 yards off shore, near the edge of an outcropping of ice.

One firefighter jumped into the water and pulled the man out. He had been floating in the pond for about 20 minutes, according to witness Joe Brown. A crew on the shore then reeled in the rescue sled carrying the firefighters and the man, who escaped the incident unharmed. His border collie also made it back to the shore safely.

Brown said that several companies of firefighters had been training at the pond throughout the week, but the rescuers who responded Saturday are not scheduled for their training session until Monday.
