A juror who helped convict a man for the murder of a Boston police officer over a decade ago is asking the court to retry his case.

NewsCenter 5’s Amalia Barreda reported that Sheridan Kassirer believes an innocent man may be serving a life sentence in jail. Kassirer sat on the jury during the murder trial of Alfred Trenkler, who was convicted in 1993 of killing Officer Jeremiah J. Hurley Jr. in a botched bombing. A second officer was also injured in the blast.

“I’m a pretty conscientious person; I thought I did a pretty conscientious job,” said Kassirer.

However, a new book about the case has prompted Kassirer to re-examine the evidence. The book provides new details about a prosecution witness who was reportedly offered a deal in exchange for testifying against Trenkler.

After reading the book, Kassirer and two other jurors wrote letters to a federal judge to ask that Trenkler receive a new trial in the case. Kassirer said that she empathizes with family members of the officer who was killed, but said that she is concerned Trenkler may not have been responsible for the murder.

“They certainly have been through a terrible tragedy, and I wish for them justice, but justice isn’t the conviction of an innocent man,” she said.

The Boston Police Department said it is reserving comment about the case until the U.S. Attorney’s office decides on its next course of action.
