HINGHAM, Mass. -- A Hingham firefighter had to be taken to the hospital Friday after rescuing a dog that fell through thin ice. NewsCenter 5's Jarrod Holbrook reported that a woman was walking her dog, Ollie, a 2-year-old black Labrador, in World's End Park when he saw a seal in the water and ran onto the ice after it.Two firefighters responded to help the dog after it fell through the ice."It was quite a tough job for the two gentlemen who tried to actually get to the dog because the ice wouldn’t support them. So it was a lot of work to get up on the ice. They kept pounding their way through it," said Hingham Fire Lt. Victor Bernan. The dog was treated at a local animal hospital and released."(Ollie) is responding very well. He is acting much more aware of his surroundings. He is eating, drinking getting up, moving around," said veterinarian Dr. Nicholas Warendorf. One of the firefighters was taken to a local hospital as a precaution.
