BOSTON -- Grace Kelly, 16, doesn’t yet have her driver’s license but she is attending Berklee College of Music on scholarship and already performing with some of the greatest jazz musicians of our time, including Phil Woods, Dave Brubeck and Wynton Marsalis."I feel so blessed to be sharing the stage with these people who are legends," Kelly said.
Teenage Musician On Edge Of World StageNewsCenter 5’s Liz Brunner reported Wednesday that Kelly is someone to watch in 2009.Her musical talents developed over the past decade, first with the piano, then clarinet. Then, six years ago, she picked up the alto saxophone.“I had really been struggling with clarinet, and I just didn't enjoy it, but when I first started the saxophone, there was just a feeling of -- I just kind of knew it was me," she said.Brunner: “What does it feel like when you play?"Kelly: “I describe it as the best feeling in the world. It's the most fulfilling thing. Honestly, that's where I am the happiest, on stage. I consider that a real treat, just to be able to play. When I'm here at Berklee, it's an incredible thing to be surrounded by music all day long, by people who love music just as much as you do, are as dedicated to it."In addition to performing on the saxophone and piano, Kelly composes, arranges and sings.“I think it all kind of describes me, and shows who I am. I never want to get to the point where I have to pick one over the other."Kelly said her musicality comes from her mother’s side of the family. When she was 5, her mother married Bob Kelly, leading to her having the same name as the one-time princess of Monaco, a name that seems made for big things.“Ever since I was really little, I've loved Grace Kelly. When I was in school, I would sign my name, Grace Kelly, just because I liked the princess so much."Bob Kelly told Brunner, “I’m her manager, her booking agent, her Web guru, her roadie, and I’m her dad, which is my most important job. I love being her dad.”Given the accolades from world-renowned musicians, two national ASCAP awards for young composers, and her fifth CD about to be released, the Massachusetts teenager may be well on her way to becoming as well-known as the princess.“It's hard to imagine, really, that it's real,” said Bob Kelly. “It's been a wonderful trip, a wonderful ride so far. I mean, she's just an amazing kid and so great to be around. So for us being together a lot for her performing, it's just been a lot of fun. That's what it really is. I'm just so proud of her.”Brunner: “Who are some of the biggest names that you'd still like to play with?"Grace Kelly: “My dream one day is to collaborate with Stevie Wonder, Sting, Paul McCartney. I know I have miles to go musically, I'm just starting out, trying to find my sound. Honestly, I think I'm here to perform because that's what I love to do most. I love to write, and I love to play, but the best thing is performing, so I just want to do it as much as possible."Grace Kelly Music
