BOSTON -- In his first public appearance since his resignation, Cardinal Bernard Law once again asked the victims of priest sexual abuse to forgive him.
NewsCenter 5's Kelley Tuthill reported that Law said he hopes his resignation will help the archdiocese in healing, reconciliation and unity."To all those who have suffered from my shortcomings and from my mistakes, I once again apologize, and from them I beg forgiveness," Law said.Law said that in the past 11 months, the archdiocese has strengthened policies to better ensure the safety of children."Though I had hoped to be part of that implementation, it came to be ever more clear to me that the most effective way that I might serve the church at this moment is to resign," Law said.Law took no questions after he read his prepared statement. He said that he plans to take a brief vacation after Christmas and then go on retreat at a monastery. After that, he said he plans to live outside the Archdiocese of Boston."Needless to say, I will continue to be available as necessary in the legal process," Law said. "The apostolic administrator, Bishop Richard Lennon, has the pledge of my prayers and heartfelt support."Alleged victims of abuse by priests said that they want more action from Law to resolve the sex abuse scandal that has shaken the church."It sounded to me like just one more statement about how sorry he is, but if he really is sorry and he's really concerned and really wants forgiveness, he should certainly reach out to the survivor community by being more cooperative," said Bill Gately, of the Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests. "He's done everything to stonewall and keep the records from us as recently as two weeks ago."Law said that he plans to fulfill his legal obligations. He has a deposition scheduled for Jan. 7.
