A recent incident in Natick of teens having to be rescued after falling through the ice is just the latest example of how dangerous and deceiving the ice can be.

NewsCenter 5's Jim Morelli reported that officials issued a warning for anyone thinking of taking a walk on ice-covered bodies of water.

Thin Ice Warning Issued

Ryan Callanan, 16, suffered frostbite on his feet when he fell through the ice two weeks ago.

"I can't really walk well, and I risk losing all of my toes," he said. "We got about 60 feet out, and we started hearing it crack. We were closer to the other shore, so we decided to try to get to the other shore."

"The consistency of the ice is different. It could be a few inches thick in one place and a foot thick 10 feet away," said Peter Judge, of MEMA.

The Foleys, of Hopkinton, found a safe alternative. They built an ice rink in their yard.

"I started putting a rink up here. I had a nice, level area and, you know, it’s been great," said Matt Foley.

Callanan had some advice for others.

"Even if you see other people out there, I wouldn't go on it. It's not worth it," he said.
