Hundreds of people braved the icy waters of Boston Harbor on Thursday to take part in a New Year's Day tradition.

Hundreds Take Icy Harbor Dip

About 500 members of the L Street Brownies took part in the 104-year tradition of taking a dip in Boston Harbor on New Year's Day. The icy plunge has evolved into a fundraiser for charities, including Camp Sunshine, a Maine retreat for children who are battling serious illnesses.

A young cancer patient from Randolph said the key to taking the plunge is mind over matter.

"I just didn’t think about what I was going to be doing," said Christopher Bartorelli, 11.

Some of the L Street Brownies have been taking the New Year's plunge for more than two decades.
