BOSTON -- The spirit of giving is filling the halls of one Winchester school, where fifth-graders are raising money for hungry children halfway around the world.
Watch ReportNewsCenter 5's Bianca de la Garza reported Wednesday that Muraco School students Owen, Carla and Ben are hoping to raise money for kids in India, where some students drop out of school because they have no money for lunch."They could have just dug into their own piggybanks, but they thought they could involve everyone in school," teacher Julie D'Andrea said."It means helping people who are less fortunate, and I think that is very special and a good thing to do," Ben said. The students learned about the Akshaya Patra Foundation in their spare time. They researched it after school. They had to write their own presentation and deliver it to students at the school. The foundation helps underprivileged children and their families with a free school meal program in government schools."It's a little sad," one student said."We learned how many children need food in India," another student said. The students learned that $28 would feed one child for one year."People spend $28 for a pair of pants or something very little, and that's good for a year of food. You need $100 to grocery shop around here," Carla said.
