POSTED: 7:09 pm EST December 4, 2002
BOSTON -- Big Dig officials announced a delay in a stretch of the roadway originally scheduled to open later this month.
NewsCenter 5's Jack Harper reported that the new connection from the Massachusetts Turnpike to the Ted Williams Tunnel was scheduled to open Dec. 20. But officials said that delays in installing the "smart technology" that monitors the tunnel for accidents will push the opening back, possibly to next year."These final testings will start next week, and I won't open any roadway unless it's safe to do so," Turnpike Chairman Matt Amorello said. The technology would allow public safety officials to determine the precise location of any accidents or other hazards in the tunnel. The connector between the Ted Williams Tunnel and Route 1A is still on schedule to open Dec. 7. The Ted Williams Tunnel will remain open only to commercial vehicles until the Massachusetts Turnpike connection is completed.Amorello said that bad weather could push the opening of the Route 1A connection back to later in the weekend.
