BOSTON -- Even though gas prices are continuing to fall, the number of weekday Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority passengers rose more than 5 percent in October, averaging more than1.3 million trips a day during the week.
Video The crowded trains are prompting the MBTA to make some unusual steps on the Red Line, according to the Boston Herald.Because it's become harder to find seats during the morning and evening rush hours, the MBTA may remove seats in order to make space for as many as 27 extra passengers per car. It's a move that could cut seating by half in some trains. The cars would have seats only for elderly or handicapped, but would be clearly marked, so passengers are aware of the lack of seating.Other cities, such as New York, have taken similar steps to free up space for more passengers. The changes are scheduled to go into effect next Monday but are scheduled to be discussed by the MBTA board at a meeting Thursday.
