BOSTON -- A new roadway that Big Dig officials say will ease congestion in East Boston will open soon.
NewsCenter 5's Jim Boyd reported that the Route 1A South connection to the Ted Williams Tunnel will open on Dec. 7. Big Dig officials said that the new roadway will help traffic to and from Logan International Airport and in East Boston neighborhoods."This is good news for Logan Airport. It separates the traffic out of Logan Airport that wants to be on 1A and into the Ted Williams Tunnel," Massachusetts Turnpike Chairman Matt Amorello said. "It's also great news for the residents of East Boston, because it will take motorists that are currently using roadways in the neighborhoods around East Boston, they'll now have direct access on 1A."A major piece of the Big Dig that should also be finished soon is the connection of the Ted Williams Tunnel and the turnpike extension. Amorello said that he could not say exactly when that would be completed."We're still within that window of time that we've anticipated," he said. "We're still on schedule to open the road before the end of the year, but we're still a little ways away from being able to pin down the date."Amorello said that part of the project should be completed close to the previously mentioned date of Dec. 20.
