Pastor Bryan Wilkerson decided to try a new strategy to keep his sermon relevant to his parishioners on Sunday: he offered up financial advice from the pulpit.

“When there’s a topic that just kind of commands everybody’s attention, I feel like let’s talk to it,” Wilkerson said.

NewsCenter 5’s Jim Morelli reported that Wilkerson, who preaches at Grace Chapel in Lexington, warned against accruing credit debt in his sermon and offered five steps to financial freedom backed by scripture.

“When you use a credit card to buy a big-screen TV, that’s bad debt, and that debt will rob you of whatever joy you might have had by purchasing that thing,” he told the group.

Wilkerson’s five steps were projected on an overhead screen for the 3,000-member Evangelical congregation to read. They included saving, spending and investing wisely.

Donna Daniel, a parishioner who attended the Sunday service, said that the sermon reminded her to be thankful for the things that she has.

“There’s always somebody who’s not doing quite as well as we are, so think of them first,” she said.
