It was just the first of a number of accidents that piled up near the slick intersection at Route 18 during the busy morning rush hour commute, including one that left a state trooper's cruiser heavily damaged after it was hit from behind by a pickup truck while he responded to an accident.

It was not clear what the extent of his injuries were but he was taken to the hospital.

The first crash was likely triggered when a black Chrysler PT Cruiser slipped off the wet exit ramp from Route 3 onto the Route 18 exit ramp headed into Weymouth.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene.

"As they were treating the patients and working on that, simultaneously there was another two-car accident which involved two rollovers," Weymouth Deputy Fire Chief John Haslam said.

A Fallon ambulance called to the first accident was then hit by a Prima Provisions box truck and both rolled over onto the grassy median.

The truck driver suffered some serious injuries.

"There was a gentlemen inside the truck with some relatively severe injuries. They had to use the Jaws (of Life) to get him out. He was entrapped. It took approximately 15 minutes to free him," Haslam said.

Authorities said the two medics in the ambulance were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, as was the motorist who was driving the first car that crashed.

The accident scene was cleared by about 10:45 a.m.
