BOSTON -- A major change in the way Bostonians get to the airport is about to be unveiled.
NewsCenter 5's Jack Harper reported that the Massachusetts Turnpike connection to the airport will open some time in the next month. Officials said that 99 percent of the work is done to connect the turnpike to the Ted Williams Tunnel."This is a milestone day for the project," turnpike chairman Matt Amorello said. "We're closing in on the completion date of a major portion of this roadway."Turnpike officials said that they believe the connection will open around Dec. 20. Commuters from the south would then be able to drive directly to the airport through the Ted Williams Tunnel."You'll be able to drive directly on the Mass. Pike, under the Fort Point Channel, under South Boston in the new tunnel system, connecting directly into the Ted Williams Tunnel," project director Mike Lewis said. "It will be open to general traffic, and you'll be able to make your connections directly to your terminal or go on to Route 1A to the north."Officials will be giving weekly updates to the press leading up to the connection opening.
