One thing's for sure: the Board of Selectmen in Middleboro can't say they don't know what might be causing strange noises near their offices late at night.

For the second time, a professional ghost hunters group has concluded that Middleboro's Town Hall, built in 1871 on donated land, is haunted. By what, they're still not sure.

The Enfield Paranormal Society, of Enfield, Conn., gave the board its eight-page report Wednesday night, saying its findings indicated "several residual hauntings and at least one active, intelligent haunting," at the building, the Brockton Enterprise reported.

The Paranormal Institute of New England reached a similar conclusion after it investigated last March and photographed an orb on the Town Hall balcony.

Wedding pictures submitted to selectmen a few months later also showed orbs among the guests at a Town Hall reception.

The paranormal investigators believe that the Town Hall is reportedly built on the grounds of an Indian village and a former school, and also contains old jail cells.

Employees of the town about 40 miles south of Boston have often reported hearing footsteps in the building's grand ballroom late at night.

A lead psychic for the group said she sensed Indian spirits radiating from the ground, suffering from disease and cholera. Another paranormal researcher for the group also said the building contained inexplicable "cold spots."

He said, however, that the spirits appeared to be benign and were no threat to anyone.
