Boston police described the exuberant celebration as peaceful, but closed down streets in the Fenway area in an effort to control the crowds.

Students at Emerson College poured out on to Tremont Street near the Boston Common chanting and cheering. NewsCenter 5's Jorge Quiroga reported that the sound of car horns honking could be heard across the city.

Hundres of other students gathered to celebrate the Obama victory on the steps of the Boston Public Library in Copley Square.

At the Christian Science Center on Massachusetts Avenue, others jumped into the church reflecting pool.

Students from Northeastern University and Wentworth Institute also joined the crowds.
