A local contest is asking young people to film their voting experience on Tuesday and make a short film.

NewsCenter 5's Bianca de la Garza reported that college students are among those going to the polls today.

Contest Calls For Voter Experience Videos

Andrew Rogers, a Suffolk University sophomore, voted for the first time. Classmate Joel Messer videotaped him.

"I just feel like this election is already historical and probably one of the more important elections of my lifetime," Messer said.

The duo plans on editing and entering an Election Day film in the "Eye on Democracy" contest, which is sponsored by Suffolk and Massvote, a non-partisan voting rights group

Each clip must be three minutes or less.

"Our goal is to take those videos and help policy makers make our policy much better," said Avi Green, of Massvote.

Green expects the films will show the good and the bad at polling places statewide. Anyone 15 or older can enter. There are cash prizes, with $2,500 for first place.

"I think that prize money will help attract filmmakers," Green said.

"This election in particular is a YouTube election," Suffolk University professor Nina Huntemann said.

Huntemann said online clips have kept her students involved the presidential election. The contest is another way to energize them.

"I think that just being told to vote isn't enough, unfortunately. I think that as an educator I need to inspire students to vote," Huntemann said.

Massvote is assembling a panel to judge the videos. The deadline is the end of the month.
