Boston Public Works crews toiled overnight and all day on Sunday after a water main erupted at the corner of Cambridge and New Chardon Streets.

It took workers more than two hours to shut off the water, police said. Roads were shut down around City Hall and the Brooke Courthouse, and a stretch of Cambridge Street was slightly buckled by the break.

Crews spent most of the day digging up Cambridge Street before they located the source of a rupture in the 16-inch water main. They will continue working into the evening to replace the water main and clean up extensive street damage.

A renovation project had just been completed in the area after several years of landscaping and repaving, residents report.

“I was in shock,” said Don Scott, who lives in the area. “We just got the street finished after years and years of work…and it blew up. This is a huge undertaking – they’re not going to clean this up in a matter of hours.”

While most of the water flowed down New Chardon Street, some homes were flooded. Residents reported low water pressure Sunday morning.

Representatives from Boston Water and Sewer said water service has been restored to some customers in the West End.

They are unsure how many customers live in the mile-long stretch of homes that is still affected by the outage.

Massachusetts General Hospital, which is located near several homes on Emerson Place that are still without service, said that it was not affected by the water main break.
